The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are known worldwide in the field of engineering and technology education. However, over the last few decades, a number of IITs have also established themselves as leading centres for management education. Leveraging their heritage of excellence of research centers namely IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee, have set up management schools offering MBA and various other business programs. These are DMS IIT Delhi, SJMSOM IIT Bombay and VGSoM IIT Kharagpur and are repeatedly ranked in the top tier business schools of India.
IIT management programs combine the institute's core strengths in analytical thinking, technology and innovation with rigorous business training. The programs are delivered through specialised departments or schools in each IIT and are self-governing in nature while being part of the centrally funded IIT system under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. As with the IIMs, IIT MBA admissions are also very competitive and selection is predominately on the basis of CAT scores followed by group discussions, personal interviews and academic profiling.
The MBA programs at IITs have created a strong brand over the years both within India and globally. Some of the top IITs like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur regularly appear in listings like the NIRF Management Rankings. What sets them apart is their ability to synthesise technology, engineering and management in a way that helps their graduates become extremely sought after in sectors that lead the digital change, product development, fintech, analytics and supply chain.

About the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public technical institutes in India established by the Government of India to provide education and conduct research in engineering and science. In the last few decades many IITs have started their own management schools, offering full-time MBA programs equivalent to those of the best business schools in the world. These programs combine technical skill with business skill, enabling their students to be effective leaders in the modern data and innovation driven business world.
The journey of MBA in IIT’s began in 1993 with the setting up of Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM) at IIT Kharagpur followed by Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM) at IIT Bombay, and Department of Management Studies (DMS) at IIT Delhi. These b-schools were formed in to feed the rising need for techno-managers, managers who could apply both their engineering skills and managerial acuity to the challenges of the complex business world. Other such IITs including IIT-Madras, IIT-Roorkee, IIT-Kanpur and IIT-ISM started offering MBA programmes over the years that provided an additional boost to IIT management ecosystem.
Currently, such older IIT management schools are known for their traditional management approach, emphasis on interdisciplinary aspects, and fusion of technology and management. They offer a full-time, two-year MBA programme (or equivalent PGDM) that candidates can undertake if they have scored well enough in the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the IIMs. They offer specialisations in Finance, Marketing, Operation, Strategy, IS and Business Analytics.
A vast majority of these colleges have their entrepreneurship cells, business Incubators & start-up accelerators and offer international exchange program, live projects, intensive internship opportunities. The teaching pedagogy is a combinations of interactive learning, analytic, project based and IT in business applications.
The IITs are autonomous public technical and research universities located across India, and are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which has declared them as institutions of national importance alongside National Institutes of Technology. The IITs receive project grants that typically run for 2 to 3 years and tend to be squarely in the field of research of the applying faculty. All the IITs are autonomous, connected to the others through a common council called the IIT Council, which oversees their administration. This allows IIT management schools to continuously update curricula, introduce new electives or courses, be part of international collaborations and respond to changes in market and industry requirements.
IIT grads are targetted by more than recruiters in a variety of industries including consulting, banking,IT, FMCG, e-commerce, manufacturing etc. With their blend of analytical abilities, leadership potential and work ethic, they are fit to be appointed to a broad range of business and technology leadership roles across India and beyond.
